The Forest of Mir lies southeast of Tethyr, a crescent-shaped patch of forest that wraps around the eastern end of the Marching Mountains and stretches south nearly to the Shining Sea.
The northern half of the forest lies in the disputed borderlands between Tethyr and Calimshan. Both nations have claimed the area between the River Ith and the Marching Mountains as their own, though neither has much significant presence in the area. There are no major cities in the area, excepting the portions of Darromar that are south of the river, so for the most part the region is largely autonomous, including the Forest of Mir.
The forest is home to a tribe of centaurs, whose current head is Kezzryn Zym, father of Tyrrox. There is also a small population of moon elves in the area as well, although they frrequent the southern half of the forest. The forest also contains sizable tribes of various giants and goblinkin, and it is believed that a few drow settlements exist under the surface near the mountains as well.
Although the region is claimed by both Tethyr and Calimshan, the tribes and settlements within the forest usually answer to neither government.

Well technically I think the Forest of Mir goes through both Tethyr and Calimshan, and I honestly don't recall where specifically in the forest I'm from, nor do I think it matters much so he may be right, but I like to think I'm from Tethyr regardless. Especially since the Forest of Mir inhabitants, for the most part, could care a less about the laws/leaders/political systems of either country, Tyrrox wouldn't really have known which country he was from probably either.

Check that I re-read my character's bio and I did tell John I was near Tethyr but not necessarily from Tethyr which is still fine considering the Forest of Mir goes through Tethyr and Calimshan.

The problem with that Faerun map that comes with the book (well, other than the fact that the scale doesn't match the one in the book) is that it doesn't show the political borders of the countries. We settled on the Forest of Mir as Tyrrox's homeland, and it looked to me like most of it was in Calimshan. The rest of the content of this post, about it being disputed land or claimed by both countries, is stuff I either found or made up later (I actually don't remember which anymore).

When I think of Calimshan I usually think of the city Calimport and the Calim Desert, so it's kind of odd to associate a forest with that country in my head. But... it really does look like that's the country it would be part of.

Judging by the back cover of the 2e Tethyr book, the northern part of the Forest of Mir is indeed in Tethyr, though the westernmost edge of it touches on some disputed territory. Most of that northern part of the forest is within the counties of Monteshi and Mirkazar. Those parts of the forest are affected by the drought, just as the rest of Tethyr is. The parts in the lower leg of the forest are mostly located within the political borders of Calimshan, and are unaffected by the drought. Most of the wildlife, as well as intelligent beings like the centaurs, have moved to the more southern parts of the forest because of the drought.
