Mizuki and Ayame are teenage twin sisters, originally from the land of Kara-Tur, the continent east of Faerun.
They look like the actress Crystal Liu from the movie The Forbidden Kingdom:
The two look identical, and unless they do their hair differently, the best way to tell them apart is that Ayame is usually carrying a lute. They each also sport two swords. Both carried two wakizashi (like a smaller katana), although recently Mizuki has started carrying a longsword, which used to belong to someone from the Bone Claws thieves' guild.
Both twins are quiet and mostly keep to themselves, so not too much is known about them. They were members of the Red Lotus guild. Their faces are usually expressionless, though with careful observation one can see sadness in their eyes. This sadness is also expressed sometimes in Ayame's lute playing, or Mizuki's dancing (usually to her sister's music).
The party's first encounter with them was at the dance contest in Myratma on the last day of Flamerule in 1375. Mizuki had entered the contest on behalf of the Red Lotus, who wanted to win the prize. She used some kind of single-use trinket that made her dancing even more graceful than usual as she danced to Ayame's musical accompaniment. However, she was not among the very top scores even before the riot broke out, so she would not have won.
Over the next few months, they were most often seen in the company of Toshiro, one of the higher-ranking members of the Red Lotus. When Solius Arkirian struck a deal with Toshiro to bring the Red Lotus into the fight with the Eyes of Night, the twins were among the strike force that entered the underground complex to fight.
The Red Lotus forces were left severely weakened by the end of the fight, and Toshiro offered to surrender into King Haedrak's custody without a fight, provided the twins were pardoned and taken out of Myratma. Leon initially accepted responsibility for Mizuki and Ayame, but once Thallatos was raised to the rank of Count, the twins attached themselves to him as his bodyguards. Since then, they have followed him nearly everywhere he goes, though they obey his orders if he tells them to back off.
When Leon and Thallatos attacked the headquarters of the Bone Claws, Mizuki and Ayame went along to help. During the battle, a vampire named Lord Seth dominated Mizuki and ordered her to attack Thallatos. Against her will, she kept trying to attack him even after Seth was slain, forcing Thallatos and Ayame to subdue and restrain her. The domination effect lasted for days, until Ayame suggested a solution. She untied Mizuki, who immediately tried to attack Thallatos, but Ayame put herself in her sister's way. Unwilling to kill her own twin in order to accomplish her orders, Mizuki was able to shake off the mental domination and was horribly ashamed of her actions. For several weeks, she had trouble looking him in the eye even for a moment.
In the months since they have become Thallatos's bodyguards, the count has tried to bring the twins out of their shell a bit, but progress has been slow.
