Riatavin, located in the northeast of Tethyr near the Snowflake Mountains, seceded from Amn to join Tethyr in 1370 DR. As the easternmost big city on the Murann-Riatavin trade route before it crosses over the mountains and heads toward central Faerun, the city is crucial to the flow of trade to the east.
With more than 85,000 people, Riatavin is now Tethyr's second largest city. It also boasts the newest outpost of the Silver Shield Mercenary Guild, which opened there in early 1375 DR, barely a month before the start of the campaign.
Riatavin seceded from Amn because it felt its interests were being ignored by the Council of Six, the rulers of Amn. They may have been right, given that there has been no serious action in the last five years to resist the city's joining Tethyr. However, this could have something to do with various wizards and sorcerers living in the city, who have spoken up in vocal support of the city's decision and pledged aid should Amn try to reclaim its former city by force.
