I bet you didn't know he had a name, huh?! (*sob*)
Agsold was one of the rare beholders who sought additional arcane power, for which he was willing to sacrifice the large antimagic eye that his kind possesses. Like all of his kind, he was paranoid and xenophobic; however, unlike most Beholders, he was able to retain enough sanity to focus on his goals, rather than feeling a panicked urge to destroy anything that crossed his path.
Agsold's pursuit of power led him to join up with the ogre mages Sothillis and Cyrvisnea. While he neither liked nor trusted either of them, he did see them as a means to achieve his goal of sacking humanoid lands and taking more arcane power for himself. To do that, he was willing to become their lieutenant and take orders... so long as they were delivered respectfully, and usually through an intermediary that Agsold could either kill or charm into becoming one of his enslaved followers.
Agsold's paranoia was so strong that he did not even wish to be seen above ground if at all possible. When the monstrous army made camp, the first thing he would do was use his disintegration eye ray to tunnel beneath the ground and hollow out a lair for himself. Agsold would work tirelessly to create tunnels to pass back and forth underneath the camp, allowing him to move around unseen and reach any part of the camp without drawing too much notice. In case of his secret tunnels being discovered, Agsold forced charmed kobold slaves to fill up the tunnels with traps. It is unknown how many underground trap-filled tunnel mazes Agsold might have left behind during the army's southward march from the Amnian city of Murann into Tethyr, but doubtless anyone who stumbles into one of these warrens will risk an unexpected and painful death from the traps that have been left behind.
Agsold's strategy of subterranean tunneling worked pretty well for the most part... until the party invaded the ogre mages' camp. As Agsold attempted to join the battle, he found himself frustrated over and over again by the efforts of Thallatos to block the unseen Beholder into his tunnels. Eventually he gave up in frustration, but not before sending some of his other unique minions into the battle.
However, on his second encounter with the party Agsold was not so lucky. First Frumpy Bumgar tanked three rays that should have been fatal, then Patrick threw Cyrvisnea at him, knocking him to the ground where he was unceremoniously killed and turned into a giant floating skull.
