The mysterious warrior known only as "the stray" took part in the pincer attack with Raina Scarlett's pirate fleet, attacking from the far side of the small village while Raina's fleet sailed into the harbor.
While he seems to have been working in concert with the pirates, the pirates did not act as if he was one of their own. Even during the wild melee that took place on the edge of the village, the pirates went out of their way to avoid standing too near the solitary figure even as they fought the defenders of the village.
Dressed in a loose-fitting gray cloak, black wide-brimmed hat, and blue scarf, not an inch of the mysterious figure's skin was exposed. The only clue to his identity was a pair of faintly glowing blue eyes.
On his hands he wore a pair of bladed gauntlets, though he seemed to instead be using his falchion during combat. Although he spoke not a word during the entire encounter, "the stray" seems to have thoroughly intimidated the pirates with whom he was apparently allied.
During the battle, he demonstrated the ability to turn his body insubstantial, rendering himself immune to all nonmagical forms of attack, and resistant even to most forms of magic. Nonetheless, he was eventually forced into retreat by the combined forces of the party, and turned invisible before sinking beneath the earth itself to escape.
However, as the rest of the town's defenders moved off after the battle, Thallatos and Rodney Lockhart lingered behind, and happened to spot the stray rising back out of the ground. Thallatos pointed him out and Rodney charged him, appearing to kill him.
After the fight, Thallatos examined the stray and confirmed his suspicions that the warrior seemed to be some sort of undead, though even Thallatos (who seems to have some knowledge of the undead) could not identify exactly what he was.
The warrior's gear, including his sword, gauntlets, breastplate, belt, bracers, amulet, and ring, was all taken by Thallatos, but some time later he found that the items had all disappeared from his bag. When he returned to the site where the body had been left, it was gone.
Raina Scarlett would later reveal under questioning that she had been introduced to the stray through the same source that had told her of the food caravan's location, and that she had agreed to work with him despite the reservations of some of her crew. As for his true identity, she did not know, and she would not reveal who introduced him to her.
